The new issue of PDNedu is now online, and I’m honored to have a cool little cameo in it alongside a bunch of other great photographers, including fellow Nikon Ambassadors Ami Vitali, Joe McNally and Ron Magill. The subject of the article is “Do-it-Yourself Lighting Tips,” a fantastic subject to tackle as light is to photography what a hunk of marble is to sculpture—the medium with which we work as visual artists.

If the Magic Golden Hour of light lasted all day, we wouldn’t have to think about any of this. But 99% of the time, we’re often faced with challenging lighting conditions that require inventive solutions. This spread (see page 70) features fellow photographers who offer some really great suggestions for capturing dynamic and dramatic light in your photography. And, as always, it turns out that the basic, common sense approach goes a long way.

Though my tip in the article focuses mostly on chasing the magic hour of natural light, I’m not opposed to working with strobes in a studio to create a cool high-contrast look. In fact, I recently produced this Tech Tip for how to create an athlete portrait in a New York studio. Check it out!
