When I need audio to sound as good as it’s ever going to be, I call in a pro like my friend Palmer Taylor, a professional audio tech and sound recordist. In the final episode of my three-part series on DSLR audio-recording techniques for Adorama TV, I sit down with Palmer to hear more about his creative process, and just what the heck is in that fanny pack he always wears.
In part one of this series, I began by discussing the most basic fundamentals: capturing crisp audio using the built-in mic on your HD-SLR, dealing with wind, and adding a shotgun mic onto your camera’s hot shoe. In part two, I wanted to go through some of the additional devices you can add to your quiver of sound-recording devices.
I know it’s possible to be a one-man band, and I’ve certainly had to be the director, DP and audio tech all at once. But when the stakes get high, and I need my audio to sound great, I bring in a guy like Palmer so I can focus on directing and creativity, and Palmer can make sure that my sound sounds great!
