Yet another game changing camera in the line-up, right next to the Nikon
D4, Nikon D800 and now the Nikon D600. I had the great privilege of
taking a Nikon D600 into the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan with me on a
recent shoot for Mammut as part of the 150 Peaks Project, celebrating
Mammut’s 150th anniversary.
I went to climb the Nameless or Trango Tower with David Lama and Peter Ortner, two of the worlds greatest up and coming alpinists. It was a unique trip for all three of us because it was the highest altitude that any of us had climbed to and it was a great experience to share with two amazing climbers.
It was important I had the right tools for the expedition and as a visual storyteller that starts with the right camera equipment. I was delighted to get my hands on the Nikon D600 because this is yet another unique tool for the tool box! This camera offers full HD video at 24, 25 and 30 frames per second, sound that can be monitored through a headset, a high quality on board microphone as well as 24.3 megapixel Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with a continuous shoot speed of 5.5 frames per second at full resolution. This is the ideal camera for a visual storyteller that is tasked with being both a still photographer as well as the director of photography to tell a motion story.
What I like most about the camera is its small form factor and the light weight body. This camera allowed me to be even lighter and faster in the mountains where every ounce counts when you are at almost 21,000 feet. Here are just a few images from the expedition and there are much more to come! The majority of this project focused on shooting motion for European television and for a film tour (more on that later!) Also more of the still photography to come through Mammut advertising. One thing is for certain, I’ll be adding two Nikon D600’s to my camera kit. This is a step forward in the visual world and for the price point it is an amazing camera. Not to mention it took quite a beating in Pakistan and I never missed a frame.
