COOL STUFF: Be The Panda

My friend and fellow Nikon Ambassador Ami Vitale has been documenting the latest, and most inventive, efforts to save the giant panda from extinction. There are only an estimated 1,600 giant pandas left in the world and many conservationists privately consider them drifting toward extinction. But now there is a glimmer of hope as years of research and failure is finally paying off. Chinese scientists and their international counterparts have cracked the puzzle of successfully breeding pandas in captivity.

The saving mantra? Be The Panda.

Ami accompanied Dr. M. Saniavan on behalf of the The Nature Conservancy and a camera crew filming a new series, to air in 2015, on wildlife and humans for PBS and National Geographic TV. Scientists have discovered that the best way to raise captive pandas that act like wild ones, and stand the best chance of survival, is to erase all traces of humans from their world and allow the mothers to raise their cubs on their own.

I am looking forward to seeing more of Ami’s work on this project. You can read more about this project in this Time Magazine Lightbox.
