It's a good day when the FedEx guy delivers a box from Nikon, because it usually means I'm about to get my hands on some amazing new technology. When the latest package arrived, not only did it contain the P7000, Nikon's newest point and shoot camera, it also came with a mission. With PhotoPlus Expo just a week away, I was to go out and shoot and edit a cool video, just as a consumer would. This would be part of my presentation to show off the potential of the new camera.
As I glanced out my office window, I got excited to do what I'd do after any rainy fall day in the Sierra, ride my mountain bike. The next morning, the trails were in perfect condition. Leaving the cranes, dollies, lights and assistants behind, I set off with my bike, a few great friends, my dog, a small tripod, a roll of duct tape and the P7000 – and you're not going to believe the results! The advent of video capable DSLRs really leveled the playing field. This camera takes it to a whole new level. It really is a sign of the times to see what is possible with a sub-$450 camera.
It was refreshing to move quickly without the weight of my camera bag filled with a DSLR and a quiver of lenses. The P7000 was in my pocket as I rode, ready to pull out on the fly to catch all the action. Through all of this, I was reminded of an old adage – the best camera is the one you've got with you. Every successful shoot starts with a great idea, passion, some raw talent, and a camera – even if it's just a point and shoot!
Many thanks to Jake Dore, Devin Ebright and Dave Paradise for all your help and a great day on the trails!
