TECH TIP: Getting the Shot with Corey Rich: Backlight Photography

There are just some basic photography fundamentals that will save the day. Working with backlight is one of those fundamentals. Just because there’s harsh midday light doesn’t mean you need to put your camera down or get out an arsenal of strobes to try to blast any harsh shadows off your subject. In fact by simply learning how to work with backlight, you will have a tool that will allow you to continue working from sunup to sundown.

In my latest Tech Tip for Adorama TV, I work with a trail runner in the Sierra Mountains to show the benefits of shooting backlit. I go over the basics, from how (and why) to expose for the shadows, why you should use a shallow depth of field, and how to create a natural rim light that will separates your subject from the background.
