Most of the professional climbers of my generation would be lucky to get a chalk or shoe sponsorship that would land them some gas money and a few pairs of shoes a year. Today’s professional climbers are landing gigs working with some of the biggest companies in the world, and appearing in the mainstream media with increasing frequency.
I was happy to see that the latest example of this encouraging trend involves my good friend, professional alpinist, and all-around bad-ass David Lama, who recently became sponsored by BMW and teamed up with the luxury car company on their latest campaign.
I was also happy to see BMW use many of my clips from the various expeditions that David and I have been on together around the world. There’s some great footage from our trip to Pakistan as well as footage from Patagonia that was captured by my colleague Lincoln Else.
Anyway, cheers to you, David! You’re the only climber I know with a BMW sponsorship. Looking forward to having you pick me up at the airport next time I come to Austria!
