Climbing magazine has dedicated this year’s Photo Annual to a man that all of us in the industry owe a debt of gratitude, Galen Rowell. Galen was an old friend and had an undeniable impact on the world of adventure photography. The feature, which opens with a photo of me making use of some of his lessons, takes a look at the techniques used by Galen to make a name for himself. Grab a copy to read what Jimmy Chin, Mikey Schaefer, Bill Hatcher and I think it means to “Shoot Like Galen”.

Galen’s legacy has been celebrated with the creation of the Rowell Award For the Art of Adventure.  The award is given each year to  one adventurer whose artistic passion illuminates the wild places of the world, and whose accomplishments significantly benefit both the environment and the peoples who inhabit these lands and regions. Winners include Jimmy Chin, Beth Wald, Jim Balog, Craig Childs and this year’s winner Cory Richards (who should get an award simply for having a great name). I’m honored to be a member of the Rowell Legacy Comittee, as well as a member of the Rowell Award Judging Panel, helping to select each year’s winner.

Also in the Photo Annual, the tables were turned on a number of photographers, as we were asked to put down the camera and just talk climbing. Read along as Andrew Burr, Jim Thornburg, Keith Ladzinski, Kennan Harvey, Caroline Treadway, Beth Wald and I all reveal our favorite climbs and talk about how our passion for rock continues to grow.

Thanks to my great friend and partner in Aurora Photos, Jose Azel, for both photos above of me at work.
