In my latest Tech Tip for my ongoing tutorial series for Adorama TV, “Getting the Shot with Corey Rich,” I wanted to use a trail-running scenario to address one of the most fundamental principles I can think of when it comes to building a complete set of storytelling photographs. That is, I wanted to talk about checklists.
The importance of a reliable, structured checklist cannot be overstated. What this really means is that you’ve thought through every detail beforehand, from the athletes you’re going to be working, to what clothing they are going to be wearing, to the location and time of day, to even the quiver of lenses that you’re going to be working with.
I headed out to a gorgeous, golden meadow with two authentic trail runners who have great strides and the slender, muscular physiques that you can only get from being an authentic runner. I prepped them with the appropriate clothing, even choosing pleasing colors that would compliment each other and pop in the image. And I brought two lenses, a Nikon AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR lens and a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR II lens. After all, the goal isn’t just to come away with one great image, but to build a body of work that best tells the trail running story.
Hope you enjoy this latest Tech Tip, and be sure to check out more videos like this on adorama.com. Also, subscribe to their YouTube channel. Whether your goal is to make running pictures, or just capture any dynamic action sport, the same principle applies: when you learn to rely on your structured checklist, you will allow your creativity to run wild.

Thank you! Great stuff as always. Thank you mentioning “authentic athletes” and “correct stride” So many brands are using models nowa days that some of the ads in the magazines look funny. Like an ad for a shoe that promotes forefoot running where the model is heel striking in the ad.
Fantastic goods from you, man. I’ve keep in mind your stuff
prior to and you’re just too wonderful. I really like what you have received here, really like what you are stating and the best way wherein you
say it. You are making it enjoyable and you still take care of to keep it smart.
I can not wait to learn far more from you. That
is actually a wonderful site.
