COOL STUFF: Photographer Ice-Locked on Ship in Antartica

Andrew Peacock has been a friend of mine for a long time, way back to when I was a college kid traveling around the United States photographing rock climbing. Andrew has always had the spirit for adventure, and he’s always off to some far-flung corner of the world on some amazing trip.

So when an e-mail from Andrew pinged into my Inbox last week, I was excited to read a tale about his latest adventure.

Andrew was on an adventure, all right, but one that literally ground to a halt. He is on board the M.V. Akademik Shokalskiy, a Russian vessel containing between 52 and 74 people including a scientific team recreating explorer Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition from a century ago.

The ship left New Zealand for Antarctica on December 9 and became stranded on Christmas Eve. Ice breakers have attempted to reach the ship, to no avail. Meanwhile, those aboard the ship have been sending out Tweets, Vines and social media to keep the world abreast of their situation.

Aurora Photos, my agency, had the pleasure of helping to distribute some of Andrew’s stunning photographs from the situation. And it was exciting to see them placed on the National Geographic news website.

I’ve been half-concerned, half-amused at my friend’s predicament. On the one hand, he’s been stuck on ice-locked ship in the Antarctic for the past two weeks. On the other hand, well, he’s made some stunning photojournalistic pictures that have circulated global news channels. Good news, though. As of Friday, helicopters have reached the passengers and rescued them from the ship … which still remains locked in the ice.

I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your website.
It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more
often. Did you hire out a designer to create your theme? Superb work!
