I’m happy to be working with Adorama TV to produce a new series of short, sweet and super-informative educational videos: “Getting the Shot with Corey Rich, Tech Tips.” Today the first episode, “Shooting Still and Motion” finally went live on Adorama TV!
In this Tech Tip, I draw lessons from my recent expedition with world-class alpinists David Lama and Peter Ortner to climb Trango Tower. I use that trip as the backdrop to show you my methods and techniques for making creative multimedia content while also remaining a meaningful participant in the action. I share the equipment I use, including how I rack it on my body for easy access, and tips such as why I never use a lens cap.
Balancing the demands of still and motion already requires quite a lot of concentration and technique. But when you throw in additional variables, such as participating in a demanding high-altitude climbing expedition, your systems and approach need to be dialed in because there’s literally no margin for error.
This is true whether you’re documenting climbing Pakistan or your son’s high-school football game. Having a good understanding of your gear, being able to access it easily and, of course, recording crisp video and dynamic stills is the name of the game.
Discerning viewers might notice that in the video I’m standing indoors, under the hot bright studio lights, while wearing a full Gore-Tex shell, Gore-Tex gloves, a harness, helmet and climbing gear. Though I addressed this quickly in the video, I thought I should mention one more time that I chose this outfit not because it’s what I wear every day while running errands. Nor did I think a freak storm might strike. I simply wanted to illustrate the fact that in the mountains you have to keep your gloves on, and it’s awkward and not comfortable—but that’s the point! So I hope you can appreciate this detail because I put a lot of sweat into make that point—literally.
This episode is the first in a series of Tech Tips that will be appearing on Adorama TV in the future. Be sure to subscribe to the Adorama TV channel on YouTube to stay up to date, and of course always go to Adorama for all your equipment needs, as I do.
