The Mountain Film International Festival (Festival International du Film de Montagne) in Autrans, France, has awarded “A New Perspective” grand prize in the category of alpinism. What a fantastic honor, and I want to thank my co-producers at Moving Adventures for helping to make this motion production a reality.

I also want to thank the films’ talented climbing stars David Lama and Peter Ortner; and my small-footprint production crew of Remo Masina and Andrew Peacock, who joined me on location in our Pakistani base camp beneath the foot of the mighty Trango Tower; and Mammut for sponsoring this trip as part of their 150 Peaks Project.

“A New Perspective” is a film about two of the world’s best young alpinists, David Lama and Peter Ortner, and their ascent of one of the great peaks of the world: Trango Tower in Pakistan. I joined David and Peter during their ascent, documenting the adventure while I climbed alongside them. The ascent was but one part of Mammut’s incredible 150 Peaks Project in 2012.

This trip to Pakistan, in the summer of 2011, was a mind-blowing and transformative experience for me. Not just in terms of finally visiting an area of the world I’d always wanted to see, but also in terms of the techniques our small-footprint production team used to capture aerial climbing footage at well over 21,000 feet. We brought in remote drones to obtain a rare perspective, and coordinated with our 21-year-old RC pilot Remo Masina, who flew the drones from basecamp, via walkie-talkie while we were up on the mountain.

I saw this film on the European Outdoor Film Tour at the end of 2012, was really impressed. Since then I’ve been hoping that a version might become available for download or streaming, but nothing has appeared. Are there any plans for wider distribution of this great film?
