I had the opportunity this past fall to spend some time on El Cap with Alex Honnold, shooting and sharing stories. Alex is a fun guy and it was a pleasure to hang out with him. What he's doing on the big stone is truly remarkable and unlike anything I have witnessed before. He’s an amazing climber and a class act. Two of my photos from this day are now up on the National Geographic site.
For the last six years, National Geographic has picked an elite group of people on which to bestow the title, Adventurers of the Year. Each recipient has, in their own way, inspired us all with an extraordinary achievement in exploration, conservation, or adventure sports. As should come as no surprise, Alex is high among the honorees. Adding to an already impressive climbing resume, Alex recently ticked a rope solo link up of El Cap and Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, along the way, shattering the solo record for El Cap and the combo. With the energy he had left over, a week later, Alex and climbing partner Shawn Leary topped out on El Cap 3 times in 24 hours, another speed record.
Voting for the 2010 People’s Choice award for Adventurer of the Year is now open. Cast your vote for Alex today!
