We are back home after wrapping our 3 day creativeLIVE course, “Still and Motion: Storytelling on Location” – what a blast! The creativeLIVE team runs a tight ship and we all had an amazing time on location at Beaver Lake, just outside of Seattle.

In case you missed it, the course is now available on the creativeLIVE website for purchase, which can either be streamed or downloaded. We taught twelve ninety minute sessions, over the three day period. Throughout the eighteen hours of teaching, my team and I covered all of the pre-production, shooting and post production details involved in the mechanics of paralleling still and motion which resulted in delivering 2 still images and a 30 second motion spot for our “mock assignment”  and client Jackson Kayak.

It was a jam packed 3 days, check out a brief overview below and the creativeLIVE website for more details:

Day 1:

The course covered all of the ingredients and skills needed to successfully produce an outdoor shoot. Beginning with all aspects of pre-production;  including shoot methodology and philosophy, creative development, script and storyboard development, bidding and estimating, scouting locations, casting talent, pulling permits, choosing the right equipment, packing gear and hiring crew.

Day 2:

The course followed the natural progression of our projects production and moved into the shooting phase; focusing on setting up both still and motion kayaking shots on Beaver Lake. Our crew, ran through multiple shots using all the basic and advanced tools in our kit. We set up locked off tripod, slider, jib, underwater shots, and even set up shots with an rc helicopter camera and showcased our hand held gimbal. We added some extra excitement when our rc helicopter crashed and quickly moved to plan-b to stay on schedule and get our aerial shot. We also covered setting up lighting and audio equipment in the field, directing talent, and working through the sequence and flow of capturing a series of multiple shots on a tight timeline.

Day 3:

On the last day, we walked through all the steps of a one camera interview, setting up cameras, lights and audio and took a deep dive into the art of post-production. The final sessions detailed the edit process for both stills and motion using the Adobe Creative Cloud, archiving and digital asset management, final client asset delivery, and editing for self promotion.

It was a whirlwind production and we’re celebrating back home with a few cold brews! A huge thanks to the entire creativeLIVE team for pulling off a seamless production and hosting us in Seattle! I could not have pulled the course off without the dedicated help from my crew, Dane Henry, Sean Haverstock, Bligh Gillies, Jordan Siemens and Marina Rich. Our world class kayak fisherman, Jim Sammons was an incredible sport, making my job easy by consistently nailing the shots and showcasing his natural beer drinking skills. The audience, both on set and connected around the globe, provided great questions, feedback and truly kept us on our toes. Lastly, our sponsors, came through big time, graciously providing great giveaways for our photo contest and supporting us through the entire course. A special thanks to Adorama, Aquatech, Bay Photo Lab, Epson, G-Tech, Litepanels, Lowepro, Manfrotto, Photoshelter, SanDisk, Summit Series of Photography Workshop and X-Rite Photo; we could not have pulled off this amazing workshop without you!
