ASK COREY: Have you experienced moire or aliasing issues with the Nikon D800?

Hi Corey! Have you experienced moire or aliasing issues with the Nikon D800, and if so how do you deal with it?

The Nikon D800 is my favorite camera of all time. I will admit to having said this about other Nikon cameras in the past—right around the time whenever the latest and greatest camera comes to market. But for me, right now, that all-time favorite camera is the D800. Super high resolution files. Amazing auto focus. The largest, most stunning visual files with incredible detail, texture, color and tone.

The D800, which I use, has an anti-aliasing filter built into the camera. And I’ve never in any way experienced aliasing or moire patters on the D800.

The D800E, which I haven’t really used, comes without the anti-aliasing filter. The lack of an anti-aliasing filter makes the D800E $300 more expensive and, from what I’ve read, just a tad sharper than the D800.

Still, experiencing situations that create aliasing or moire patterns are rare–such as when shooting fabrics with repeating patterns, or computer and television monitors. If you’re experiencing any aliasing or moire patterns it sounds as if your camera might need to be serviced. Send it in to a certified Nikon service center to figure out what exactly is happening, along with photos and written descriptions that illustrate the problem you’re experiencing.
